Document S.O.S' highly trained paper conservators can treat all manner of paper, parchment, artwork and
historical documents. They can arrest on-going acid attack and discolouration, while creating a buffer against
future environment degradation. Conservation techniques are used to repair physical damage, tears and
missing areas, and can generally increase the life expectancy of an item. Each assignment has to be analysed
individually taking into account pigments, inks and paper types.

As a result of light exposure and acidic leather, bookbindings can be in frequent need of refurbishing and
conservation work. Document SOS teams can refurbish onsite or remove to our workshops in part or interiority

Although paper is one of the most hardy of information substrates, it requires a stable and controlled
environment for safe long-term storage. Unfortunately, storage and environment conditions are generally only
considered when it is too late and mould or insect infestation has set in. Relative Humidity (RH) levels,
temperature and light all play a major role in the deterioration of the cellulose structure and subsequently the
document, book or work of art. It is therefore crucial that strict controls are regulated and that routine readings
are taken in the archive or storage area.
We can provide Risk Assessments for historical collections, which will encompass existing environment
conditions and highlight the anticipated degradation implications for the future. Recommendations are made to
mitigate this disintegration as well as presenting solutions to unsuitable storage locations.

After undertaking conservation measures it is recommended that collections are replaced in a storage
environment with as much protection as possible. Framing, using acid free board ultraviolet filtered glass is
recommended for prints, drawings and watercolours whilst acid-free boxing is ideal for archived material.
